Isoxaben

Benzamide cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor. The Gallery label assigns it WSSA Group 29; the WSSA mechanism summary lists benzamides as Group 21 in its cellulose inhibitor section.[1][2]

Isoxaben is a preemergence herbicide that keeps broadleaf weeds from establishing from seed by blocking cellulose, a building block of plant cell walls. Gallery 75 Dry Flowable uses it in established lawns, landscape and nursery ornamentals, groundcovers, bulbs and non-crop areas, but it does nothing to weeds already growing.[1][2]

Gallery 75 Dry Flowable Specialty Herbicide (also sold as Gallery T&V 75 Dry Flowable): Caution[1]

Seeding and new lawns

Don't overseed an established lawn sooner than 60 days after an application. On new seedings, wait until the grass is at the three-leaf stage, tillering and well rooted.[1]

It is labeled for Kentucky bluegrass, fescues, perennial ryegrass, bentgrass, bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass, bahiagrass and buffalograss, but not for putting greens or dichondra.[1]

Ornamentals to avoid

The label lists plants that have been injured, including ajuga, purple coneflower, hydrangea, candytuft, Euphorbia, dwarf burning bush and some rhododendrons. Avoid beds where bedding plants will go in within a year.[1]

Where it is used

Apply before target weeds germinate: late summer to early fall, early spring, or right after cultivating. It controls only weeds from seed, not established weeds or ones sprouting from roots or runners.[1]

It needs at least 0.5 inch of rain or sprinkler water to activate. It can sit on the soil surface for up to 21 days, but control gets erratic if it isn't watered in by then.[1]

Clear existing weeds, prunings and debris first, by cultivation or a postemergence herbicide.[1]

When replanting in a bed treated within the past 8 months, use untreated soil as fill around the roots.[1]

Safety and environmental hazards

People

Signal word CAUTION: causes eye irritation and is harmful if inhaled. Avoid breathing dust or spray mist; handlers wear long sleeves, long pants, shoes and socks.[1]

Pets

In landscape and turf settings, the label says not to enter treated areas until sprays have dried unless wearing coveralls, waterproof gloves, shoes and socks.[1]

Bees and pollinators

The label has no bee warning. Its non-target warning is that drift can reduce germination or emergence of nearby plants.[1]

Fish and water

Don't apply directly to water. Isoxaben may leach to groundwater in permeable soils and has a high potential to reach surface water in runoff for several months; a vegetated buffer strip reduces that.[1]

Common questions

Will isoxaben kill weeds that are already growing?
No. Gallery controls weeds germinating from seed only, so existing weeds need to be pulled, cultivated or sprayed with a postemergence product.[1]
Does isoxaben stop crabgrass?
The weed lists are broadleaf weeds, plus rattail fescue at the top rate. For annual grasses, the label allows a tank mix with dithiopyr, or a separate treatment alongside benfluralin or trifluralin in turf.[1]
How long after Gallery can I overseed my lawn?
At least 60 days, according to the label's turf restrictions.[1]
