Napropamide

WSSA Group 15 herbicide; Group 15 compounds are thought to inhibit very-long-chain fatty acid synthesis and typically affect weeds before they emerge.[1][2]

Napropamide is a WSSA Group 15 preemergence herbicide sold as Devrinol 2-XT. It stops annual grasses and some broadleaf weeds from seed in ornamental plantings, ground covers, nursery stock, warm-season turf, and a long list of fruit, nut and vegetable crops.[1][2]

Ornamentals on the label

Listed plants include daylily, hosta, chrysanthemum, daisy, gazania, coneflower, yarrow, bird of paradise and deciduous and evergreen trees. Field-grown iris, daffodil, tulip and lily bulbs have their own 6 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft rate.[1]

Planting after napropamide

Crops on the label can be planted right away. Leafy vegetables need 60 days, cereal grains 180 days, and other unlisted crops 365 days.[1]

Where it is used

It does not control established weeds. Apply to freshly weeded soil before seeds germinate, or in fall and winter for control the next spring and summer.[1]

Water it in: ornamentals and nursery stock need 1 to 2 inches of rain or irrigation soon after application, and ground covers and dichondra at least 1 inch.[1]

In warm-season turf, time crabgrass treatment 2 to 3 weeks before emergence. Goosegrass usually starts 6 to 7 weeks after crabgrass.[1]

Heavy leaf litter or trash on the ground can weaken control, and soils above 10% organic matter are generally not recommended.[1]

Safety and environmental hazards

People

Signal word CAUTION: harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin and causes moderate eye irritation. Repeated skin contact may cause allergic reactions in some people. Handlers wear long sleeves, long pants, waterproof gloves, and shoes plus socks.[1]

Pets

The label says not to let people or pets enter the treated area until sprays have dried, and not to graze treated areas.[1]

Bees and pollinators

There is no direct bee warning, but the label says it is toxic to plants and may harm forage and habitat of pollinators next to the treated site.[1]

Fish and water

Toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, with a high potential to reach surface water in runoff for months. A vegetated buffer near ponds and streams and avoiding application before rain within 48 hours both cut runoff.[1]

Common questions

How much Devrinol 2-XT per 1,000 square feet?
6 to 8.8 fl oz for ornamentals, or 3 fl oz for warm-season turf, each mixed in 2½ gallons of water.[1]
Can it be used on cool-season lawns?
The turf directions are for warm-season grasses only: bahia, bermuda, centipede, St. Augustine and fescue.[1]
