- Active ingredient
- (Z)-9-Tricosene (CAS 27519-02-4)
- Chemical class
- Fly sex attractant (pheromone). On this label it is the lure; the insecticide that kills the flies is dinotefuran.[1]
- Mode of action
- Fly sex attractant that draws house flies to the bait; not an IRAC-classified insecticide. The bait's killing agent, dinotefuran, is IRAC Group 4A[1][2]
- Signal word
- Starbar QuikStrike Fly Bait (registered as RF2172 Insecticide Bait D): Caution[1]
Where this bait can't go
It is not for use inside homes or anywhere children or animals might be present. It can't be scattered indoors or in food and feed areas, and it can't go around unenclosed commercial dumpsters.[1]
Stations are allowed inside barns and in non-food areas of restaurants and similar businesses, but never in serving areas while food is exposed.[1]
Lure plus insecticide
Tricosene doesn't kill flies by itself here. It attracts house flies to the granules, and the dinotefuran in the bait, an IRAC Group 4A neonicotinoid, does the killing.[1][2]
Where it is used
Start baiting at the beginning of fly season to keep house fly numbers manageable, and reapply as the bait is eaten.[1]
Skip windy spots. The label says house flies avoid windy areas and stations that move, so put bait in several sheltered places where flies are a problem.[1]
Hang bait stations at least 4 feet above the ground, and concentrate them near dumpsters, stables, trash piles and other spots that attract flies.[1]
The label recommends rotating baits with different modes of action and pairing them with sanitation, manure management, barriers, sprays and traps.[1]

Safety and environmental hazards
People
Signal word CAUTION. Avoid getting it on skin, in eyes or on clothing, and wash with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking or smoking.[1]
Pets
Keep it away from children and animals: don't apply where poultry or animals, especially dogs and young calves, can pick it up or lick it, and place stations out of their reach.[1]
Bees and pollinators
The label says the bait is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment. Don't apply it while bees are actively foraging in the area.[1]
Fish and water
Toxic to shrimp. Don't apply to water or areas with surface water, and drift or runoff may harm aquatic organisms nearby.[1]
