Clethodim

Cyclohexanedione ('dim'); WSSA Group 1 acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor.[2][1]

Clethodim is a WSSA Group 1 herbicide in the cyclohexanedione family, which blocks the ACCase enzyme grasses need for fatty acid production. The Valent label behind Envoy Plus and Select Max kills annual and perennial grasses in crops and ornamental plantings but leaves broadleaf plants alone.[1][2]

Plants tested as tolerant

The ornamental tables list trees such as maples, oaks, dogwood and redbud; ground covers like liriope, English ivy and vinca; flowers including daylily, hosta, iris and marigold; and shrubs such as azalea, boxwood, holly, juniper and rose.[1]

Slight speckling has been seen on sweet alyssum, petunia, snapdragon, azalea and nandina. For anything unlisted, the label advises testing a few plants first.[1]

Perennial grasses take repeat sprays

Bermudagrass is sprayed at about 3 inches tall or with runners up to 6 inches, and quackgrass at 4 to 8 inches. A repeat application is made if regrowth appears.[1]

Where it is used

Grass lawns are not a safe target. The label says turf and other grass crops are highly sensitive and may be injured or killed if the spray reaches them.[1]

Spray only actively growing grass at the listed heights; most annual grasses are treated at 2 to 6 inches. Drought, heat, cold or flooding stress cuts uptake and control.[1]

Hold off if rain is expected within an hour, and wait at least a day before following with a broadleaf herbicide. Expect grass to yellow and collapse over 7 to 14 days.[1]

Around ornamentals, use a non-ionic surfactant rather than crop oil concentrate, which the label says may injure flowers and foliage.[1]

Safety and environmental hazards

People

Signal word CAUTION: causes moderate eye irritation and is harmful if swallowed, and repeated skin contact may trigger allergic reactions in some people. Handlers wear long sleeves, long pants, chemical-resistant gloves, shoes, socks and protective eyewear.[1]

Pets

The label groups people and domestic animals under the same eye, swallowing and skin warnings. For non-farm uses, keep unprotected people away from the spray area and out of treated areas until sprays have dried.[1]

Bees and pollinators

The label warns the product is toxic to plants and may harm the forage and habitat of non-target organisms, including pollinators, beside the treated area, so follow its drift directions closely.[1]

Fish and water

Don't apply directly to water, where surface water is present, or where runoff is likely, and don't contaminate water when rinsing equipment.[1]

Common questions

Will clethodim kill my lawn?
It can. The label says turf is highly sensitive and may be injured or killed, so it is meant for beds and plantings, not lawns.[1]
Does clethodim kill nutsedge or broadleaf weeds?
No. The label states it does not control sedges or broadleaf weeds.[1]
How much clethodim per gallon for spot spraying?
Mix 0.44 to 0.85 oz of product per gallon of water, a 1/3 to 2/3% solution, plus the required adjuvant.[1]
